In a little over two months the Smithsonian exhibit, “Hometown Teams,” will arrive at the Mary J. Barnett Memorial Library in Guthrie Center. The exhibit will be housed at the library from June 23-August 5. While the exhibit is in town, there will be an event celebrating local sports nearly every weekend.
Exhibit Committee member Becky Carico talks about the festivities planned for opening weekend. “We are going to have a ribbon cutting, the pep band from the school (Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center High School) is going to be there with their uniforms on, so that ought to be fun. We have invited Bart Smith, Steve Smith, Joe Rasumssen and Ray Swensen. These are all coaches. Ray and Steve have coached here. Bart and Joe are alumni that are coaching in other towns. We think it’s going to be a good round table discussion on coaching and playing ball.”
The ribbon cutting and subsequent round table will begin at 10:30am on June 23rd at the library. Other themes for weekend events include: Iowa State University, six-on-six girls basketball, baseball, the University of Iowa, and other colleges and local athletes.
