Tuesday’s warmer temperatures correlated into some of the best performances ever recorded for the Panorama girls track team. The Panthers were one of 14 teams competing in the annual Earlham Invitational, running away with the team championship with 163 points scored. Panorama claimed first place honors in nine of the 23 scored events, and a pair of athletes broke school records in the process.

Junior Morgan Johnk had a pair of first-place individual finishes with both results setting new Earlham Stadium records and one that established a new school record. Johnk set a new school record in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 15.66. She bested her previous 100-meter hurdles record of 15.91 seconds clocked during her freshman season in 2016. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network spoke with Johnk after her record-breaking performance in the 100-meter hurdles. She hopes her recent individual results can qualify her for one of the state’s biggest meets later this month. “I’m hoping that my high jump, I jumped 5’3.25″, I’m hoping that can get me into (the) Drake (Relays), cause that would be awesome,” Johnk said, “I’m really trying to get into Drake for my 100 hurdles, but we’ll see.”

Johnk’s high jump performance Tuesday night was the best leap ever recorded in Earlham. The top 24 performances across the state recorded before midnight April 20 will qualify for the annual Drake Relays competition. Also, freshman Ella Waddle continues to put her imprints on the school’s distance running records, crushing the schools’ 1500 meter run record that stood for a decade. Waddle’s time of 11:09.44 was the second fastest race time recorded and broke Delaney Turner’s 2008 record by nearly eight seconds. AC/GC’s Kate Crawford won the 1500 meter run with a meet-best time of 10:45.24.

Panorama also won gold in the girl’s discus throw (Lydia Knapp-113’04”), girls long jump (Kassidy Bremer-15’8″), the 800-meter run (Devyn Kemble-2:28.95), the shuttle hurdle relay (Maggie Woodvine, Shey Storesund, Payton Douglass, and Johnk-1:09.75), 4×100 meter (Bailey Beckman, Johnk, Kemble, and Bremer-53.21 seconds), and the 4×400 meter relay (Gwen Steffen, Brianna Hoffman, Douglass, and Kemble-4:21.14). The Panorama girls track team resumes their season today, taking part in the AC/GC Girls Invitational. First events begin at 5 p.m. in Guthrie Center.
