Clel BaudlerLast week the Chinese government officially responded to President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on aluminum and steel imports. China intends to place a 25% tariff on over 100 American commodities and other goods, including those originating from Iowa.

While many farmers are concerned over what may transpire, Iowa District 20 Representative Clel Baudler doesn’t believe the escalations will continue. “Right now it’s a war of words. I think that this will get straightened out before it actually affects long-term markets… I speak to farmers down at the legislature and quite frankly, they are concerned. They’re watching it but they’re not worried at this stage.”

Baudler says that soybeans are the main target for these tariffs, but he doesn’t believe pork will be affected much. He is overall in favor of the President’s plan as a way to balance trade discrepancies between the two nations.
