Friday morning, Hometown Foods of Guthrie Center had an abnormal surplus of shoppers. That’s because Guthrie County Farm Bureau held its first ever grocery cart races to benefit New Opportunities’ food pantry. By the end of the competition, seven teams collected 165 items for a total of $360.49.
Each team had ten minutes to gather as many items as possible that could be grown in Guthrie County. Teams were scored on time, as well as the number and variety of items gathered. Teams also earned points in a trivia contest prior to the races. Guthrie County Corn Growers was the winning team, gathering a variety of 16 items in just under three minutes. Main Street Guthrie Center gathered the most items with 30. Other participating organizations included: Guthrie County Extension, Panorama FFA, AC/GC FFA, New Opportunities, and Farm Bureau Financial Services.
GCFB hopes to make this an annual event. Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio was also there broadcasting the action live.
