Jefferson Fire Department

A burn barrel turned into a grass fire in the northern part of Greene County.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams says they responded to the call just after 5pm Thursday in the 1000 block of 170th Street. Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio that trash was being burned in a barrel, and a spark from the barrel may have ignited nearby grass to catch fire. Less than ten-acres of grass, from a ditch through a heavily wooded area, burned before fire crews could put it out.

Williams notes that due to the location of the fire, they had a hard time getting water trucks to it, so they had to put it out through other means with rakes. It took crews about 90-minutes to put out the flames and no structure or other property damage was done. No one was hurt. Williams says the property owner is Donald Kersey.

The Greene County Sheriff’s office assisted the fire department.
