With severe weather season upon us, the National Weather Service is coordinating several training courses for the public to be well informed.
A storm spotter training class will take place this Thursday at 6:30pm at the Grand Junction Community Center. A National Weather Service representative will lead the class and give hints and tips of what people can expect whenever there is severe weather and what information the public can report to the National Weather Service. Greene County Sheriff and Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams says fire departments are generally trained in severe weather spotting.
“All the fire trucks have a specific location to go to during severe weather. And they go out and assist law enforcement with spotting, (such as) funnel clouds, tornadoes, high winds, because we have to report all of that to the National Weather Service.”
All law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel, city and county officials, as well as the general public are encouraged to attend the free training. Greene County Emergency Management is sponsoring the event. Contact Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Morlan at 386-4404 for more information. No pre-registration is necessary.
