The inaugural high school boys’ soccer match for Greene County ended with a 4-3 overtime victory over Humboldt on Monday night in Grand Junction. Leo Marquez, a foreign exchange student from Brazil scored the first two goals for the Rams. Junior Gutierrez scored on a penalty kick with one minute left in regulation to tie the match at 3-3, then Luis Tuesta scored the game winner with 5:22 remaining in the 10 minute overtime session for the win.

The Rams led 1-0 before Humboldt knotted the score at 1-1 at the half. A fast second half score by Greene County put the Rams ahead 2-1, but consecutive goals had Humboldt leading 3-2 with time running out. A yellow card vs. the Wildcats gave the Rams a big scoring opportunity in OT, and Tuesta and his teammates took advantage.

The victory made a winner of the first year program, along with head coach Carl Behne, and assistant Chad Black.

Humboldt had a pair of goals from sophomore Alex Gonzalez, who had 21 goals last season as a ninth grader.

Next on the Greene County boys’ schedule is a home match with Carroll High on Thursday, April 5 in Grand Junction.
