The sport of soccer had its debut in Grand Junction late Monday afternoon. The Greene County girls lost to Humboldt 2-1 in the inaugural match. The Rams went ahead 1-0 on a by sophomore Nayelli Lopez with 11:01 to play in the first of the two-40 minute halves. It was her first career varsity goal.

The Wildcats tied the  contest with 4:45 to go in the first half, then scored the eventual game winner with 29:14 left in the second half.

Greene County nearly sent the contest into overtime with 15 seconds to play, but a potential tying goal was thwarted by the Humboldt goalkeeper.

Marilyn Tasler is the Rams’ head coach. She told Raccoon Valley Radio she saw a lot of positives for a first match of the season in cold and windy conditions.

The girls were to have hosted Carroll High in Grand Junction today, but that has been postponed. The make up date is Tuesday, April 24 in Grand Junction with the varsity match first at 4:30, then one half of JV action to follow.
