On Tuesday State Auditor Mary Mosiman released a report on a special investigation involving misappropriated funds in two Guthrie County communities. The investigation concerns financial transactions processed by former Bayard and Yale City Clerk, Renee Van Gundy. According to the report, Mosiman found just over $60,000 in improper or unsupported disbursements between January 1, 2008 and January 31, 2016.
In Bayard, the majority of the $31,623.64 improper disbursements went to personal purchases at various vendors, including: Fareway Stores, Bed Bath & Beyond, Wal-Mart, and various restaurants. In Yale, the majority of $29,174.36 in improper disbursements went to personal natural gas, electric, and cell phone bills. Of that amount in Yale, about $5,500 consists of payments to vendors for which the City could not locate supporting documentation. There was also $923.29 in undeposited utility collections as a result of Van Gundy not properly paying her City utility bill on her personal residence.
Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jesse Swensen tells Raccoon Valley Radio Van Gundy, now residing in Ohio, is cooperating fully with the investigation and the county will conduct its own audit in the coming months. No charges have been formally filed at this time pending further investigation. Van Gundy served as the Yale City Clerk from February 5, 2008- January 5, 2016. She served as the Bayard City Clerk from July 1, 2010- April 7, 2014. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
