Dallas County will soon be getting its very own “Freedom Rock,” with Minburn as the chosen site.
Ray “Bubba” Sorensen of Greenfield is the artist behind the “Freedom Rocks,” and his goal is to have one in all 99 Iowa counties. Dallas County’s rock will be placed in Minburn, south of the 1914 Depot. John West from the American Legion Post of Minburn tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the Legion will be paying for the rock, which is currently located in Perry. He says it’s more of a boulder than a rock, as it weighs around 3,200 pounds. The Legion hopes to move it in the coming weeks as the weather improves.
While the Legion is footing the bill for the rock, West says they’ll be doing some fundraising to pay for the site itself. The plan is to have a memorial area around the rock, which they hope to have in place even before Sorensen is scheduled to paint. At the moment, given Sorensen’s schedule for painting “Freedom Rocks” in other counties, as well as his run for State Representative, the Dallas County rock will likely be completed some time in 2019.
