Flower Shop Fire

Downtown Perry is still recovering after a fire shook up several businesses early Wednesday morning.

The fire started around 2 a.m. in the concrete block addition in the rear of the building shared by Bacon Jewelers and Perry Floral. While the fire was extinguished before there was any significant structural damage to the building, its effects are still being felt. There was significant smoke and water damage to both businesses, as well as the neighboring Ben’s Five and Dime, and the apartments above the businesses. Each of the stores have been closed since Wednesday as they attempt to clean up the damage.

Meanwhile, the people of Perry have rallied around the businesses to offer their support and prayers. Thursday afternoon, students and staff from St. Patrick’s Catholic School took time to write messages and draw pictures in chalk on the sidewalk outside the stores. They offered messages and pictures of love and hope as their way to show the owners that the community is behind them.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire Chief Chris Hinds said it originated in shelving units used by the floral shop that contained mineral spirits, varnish, and floor sealer, though he hasn’t determined the source of ignition. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it’s made official.
