ACGC senior Zach Fees saw his quest for 100 wins in IHSAA wrestling competition come up just short this past season. However, Fees is still picking up match victories in the offseason. The three-time District Qualifier finished sixth in the 138 pound weight class at the Corn Cob Nationals tournament last weekend in Des Moines.
After receiving a first round bye, Fees defeated state qualifier Bryce Hatten from Winterset in the second round with a fall at 90 seconds. He followed that up with a 4-3 decision victory in the quarterfinals against Anthony Vilchis of Geneva, Illinois. Fees saw his run come to an end in the semifinals, falling to Kaden Hart of St. Peters, Missouri after 3:31.
In the Consolation portion, Fees was on the short end of a 2-1 decision to Ottumwa’s Tayton Ricard. In the 5th place match he gave a tough effort, but fell to Storm Lake’s Christopher Shima of Storm Lake. The sixth place finish is the best for Fees, who is still undecided as to his plans after high school. Fees was the only Charger to participate at the tournament.
