acgcLast weekend Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center freshman Jenna Andersen was in shock when she learned her project qualified for this year’s International Science and Engineering Fair. Andersen becomes the first AC/GC student to receive an invitation to the event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as an Observer.

Teacher Alexa Groff helped Andersen pick out her project, “How Much Iron is in Your Cereal.” She included her four favorite cereals in her experiment, including: Frosted Flakes, Frosted Mini Wheats, Cheerios, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Of the four, she concluded that Cinnamon Toast Crunch had the most iron.

Andersen recounts the moment she learned her project qualified to the international fair. “I was very surprised when my name got announced. I didn’t think that I was going to get it.”

Groff is extremely proud of her students, especially since they were all high school girls. “When I was growing up, I was the only female that was involved at my high school in science fair. It’s kind of nice and refreshing seeing the girls that we took excel in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). It kind of brings out a sense of pride. I’m all about girl power.”

The week-long fair is May 13-19th. To hear more about science fair activities at AC/GC, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
