When you win a state championship, you get more offers to come and wrestle. That’s what Perry senior Zach Stewart is finding out as he prepares for a busy month of March wrestling in at least two all star events this month. The 138 pound 3A state champion will head to the West Gym this Saturday for the annual War at West Gym event. This showcase is attended by a number of college coaches and will feature some of the best wrestlers in all of Iowa’s three classes. Stewart will also take part in the annual North vs South All Star Meet scheduled for March 24th in Charles City. These events are freestyle events which has some variances from the traditional folkstyle used in high school and college. The emphasis in folkstyle is to show the ability to wrestle from underneath. To the contrary, freestyle is focused on offensive wrestling from your feet. The scoring is completely different with throws and leg laces resulting in 2 points for brief back exposure. Unless a scoring opportunity exist, wrestling is stopped and started back in the center after a takedown.
