With the recent snowfall Tuesday, Jefferson city crews were out plowing and removing snow from the roadways, parking lots and sidewalks.
When plow crews go out in the winter time, they typically apply sand and salt to all of the stop and yield sign intersections, and also to the business and residential streets. The City purchases the material from Greene County. The budget for the material increased by $2,500, up to $15,500, with another increase proposed for the next fiscal year of up to $18,000. City Administrator Mike Palmer points out that the number always changes, due to the unpredictability of how a winter season is going to be.
“As far as our guys go, it’s really quite a feat what they do. This year we’ve started to use more just pickup trucks as supplemental plows, so you may see those going up and down the streets. They are a quicker way to at least clear a lot of it off before the bigger plows come through. But by doing this, they are able to clear the streets much faster.”
Public Works Director Dave Morlan says they have about half of the amount of sand and salt left to carry over to the next winter season.
