The Perry Humane Society currently operates in a building near downtown, however President Breanna Morman says that won’t be their home for much longer.
A plot of land on the southeast side of Perry was donated by Joyce Conklin-VanKirk for the express purpose of building a new animal shelter. Morman says they’re currently in discussions with a building committee to figure out their options for the new facility. The current building, which only holds a handful of cats as all dogs are kept in foster homes, has been sold to a new owner. Because of that, their timetable for the new location has been accelerated. Morman adds, the new building will house animals of all kinds, not just cats.
“Anything and everything that we have should be there, unless something is needing some time away from the shelter. If that dog or cat would benefit from a foster home, we will still have foster homes to do those sorts of things. But you should have access to come in and see what we have available for adoption and volunteer at this new facility. It should all be in one place.”
To raise money for the new shelter and other operations, Morman says they’re starting smaller with a few fundraisers, including the recent one during the Chocolate Walk. Eventually, though, she says they will kick off a capital campaign that will include several grant applications.
