Two Perry wrestlers in Class 3A join one from ADM and one from Woodward-Granger in 2A in the Iowa High School State Championship finals Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Junior Kaleb Olejniczak at 126 lbs. and senior Zach Stewart at 138 lbs. both are in the finals for Perry. Olejniczak won his semifinal match 10-5 vs. Caleb McCabe of North Scott Eldridge and is now 48-5 His opponent is the finals is Brody Teske of Ft. Dodge, a senior who is 38-1 and will be trying for his fourth straight state title.

Stewart won by fall in the semifinals in 5:04 over Drevon Ross of Ft. Dodge to improve to 54-5. He’ll face Deville Dentis of Des Moines East (44-3) in the title match.

Researchers tell Raccoon Valley Radio this is the first year since 1971 that Perry has had two State wrestling finalists.

Zachary Thompson of Perry could finish as high as third place after he won his third consolation match 3-2 over Conrad Braswell of Cedar Rapids Prairie. Thompson will have two matches tomorrow to determine his placing.

Andrew Flora of ADM upended 2017 106 lbs. champion Grayson Kesterson of Williamsburg in the 2A 113 lbs. semifinals by a 4-3 final. The junior is 45-1 and will meet Centerville freshman Nathaniel Genobana (32-2) for the title.

Cody Fisher of Woodward-Granger is a sophomore who will be in the finals for the second year in a row against the same opponent, Bryce Esmoil of West Liberty. Esmoil won by technical fall in 2017. Fisher was a 9-4 winner in Friday’s semifinals over Dalton Chipp of Hampton-Dumont to improve to 54-2.

Other area wrestlers will be in the consolation semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m. Panorama senior Trevor Carey lost by fall in 1:24 in the semifinals at 182 in 1A to Garet Sims of Iowa Valley (Marengo). Carey will finish somewhere between third and sixth place. Four of Carey’s Panorama teammates will wrestle for seventh place. They are Danny Nordquist at 126, Wyatt Appleseth at 132, Gunnar Grunsted at 170 and Dalton Holmes at 195. Appleseth is a freshman and the other three are seniors.

In 2A, Jack West of Winterset (132) will be in the consolation semifinals. In 3A, Zane Mulder at 160 and Zach Needham at 182, both of Dallas Center-Grimes, are in the consolation semifinals.
