For the first time in the history of the wrestling program at Panorama High School, the Panthers have five wrestlers as top eight place winners. Senior Trevor Carey leads the way as he won his quarterfinals match Friday afternoon and will be in the semifinals later tonight.
Four of his teammates won second consolation round wrestlers to guarantee themselves top eight finishes, meaning the Panthers brought five to State and will go home with five medals.
Carey was a 17-7 major decision winner in the quarterfinals vs. Christian Wolthuizen of Akron-Westfield ti improve to 44-8 on the season. He meets 54-1 Garet Sims of Iowa Valley (Marengo) later tonight with a trip to tomorrow night’s Championship finals on the line.
The other Panthers and their results from the consolation round are:
Danny Nordquist (126) won 9-4 over Logan Heaberlin, Belmond-Klemme; Wyatt Appleseth (132) won 6-5 over Blake Abrahamsson, Okoboji (Milford); Gunnar Grunsted (170) won 9-3 over Brayden Lyman, Eagle Grove; Dalton Holmes (195) won 8-3 over Darius Gasche, West Monona-Whiting.
All four will be in third round consolation matches later tonight. In win in that round means a finish as high as third is still possible. A loss in that round means a seventh or eighth place finish.
Dalton Arnold of Coon Rapids-Bayard at 220 lbs. lost 8-3 to Marquise Paino of Tripoli and will not place. West Central Valley’s Alex Wells at 285 lost by fall in 1:59 to Brock Farley of Denver and that ended the tournament for Wells.
