The Class 3A portion of the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament for day one is over. All three Raccoon Valley Radio Network stations, plus www.raccoonvalleyradio.com will followed seven wrestlers on a play-by-play basis this afternoon.
Perry has Zachary Thompson at 120 lbs. Kaleb Olejniczak at 126, and Zach Stewart at 138 and all three were winners in round one. Thompson won 8-5 over Jeremy Ayala of Ft. Dodge. The fourth rated Stewart improved to 46-5 and he moves into the Friday quarterfinals vs. Ben Monroe of Ankeny Centennial. Olejniczak rolled to a 14-1 major decision at 126 lbs. over Camden Baarda of SE Polk. The Blue Jays junior is ranked fifth and now 46-5. Stewart, ranked number one, needed just 43 seconds to win by fall over Sterling Brunk of Johnston at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Stewart is now 52-5 Perry is done for the day and will have all three in Friday’s quarterfinals mid to late Friday morning.
Dallas Center Grimes qualified Luke Fistler at 152, Zane Mulder at 160, Zach Needham at 182, and Jacob Comer at 285. Fistler (36-10), ranked tenth, lost by fall in 32 seconds to Harlan Steffensmeier of Ft. Madison in round one and lost 7-6 to Eric Steele of Sioux City East in the consolation round to end his tournament. Mulder, ranked second, dominated number three Jake Matthaidess of North Scott (Eldridge) by a major decision, 8-0. Mulder is now 40-1. Zach Needham lost to second rated Anthony Sherry of Glenwood by 19-4 technical fall, but came back in his consolation match to win by fall in 43 seconds over Trevor Maiers of Dubuque Hempstead and he’ll carry a 36-15 record into tomorrow’s second consolation round. Second rated Jake Ryan of Johnston was a winner over Comer by a 5-3 score. In the consolation round, Comer tied the match with Troy Monahan of Mason City as time expired with a takedown, but lost in OT, 10-8.
Class 3A quarterfinals will follow 2A quarterfinals, which start at 9 a.m. A second consolation round will follow.
