Class 2A wrestlers opened the 2018 Iowa high school state tournament this morning at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Ten area 2A wrestlers began the day with seven advancing to day two on Friday Five were first round winners while the other two lost in the first round, but won first round consolation matches to remain alive. The other three lost twice and their tournament has come to an end.
ADM went three for three in the opening round and the Tigers will have Andrew Flora, Nolan Harsh, and Kaden Sutton all in Friday morning’s quarterfinals. That trio will be joined by Winterset’s Jack West and Cody Fisher of Woodward-Granger in the quarterfinals.
Flora at 113 lbs. won by fall in 1:39 over Coledon Bethel of Southeast Valley (Cowrie) and the third ranked Tiger is now 43-1. Harsh, ranked seventh at 152 lbs., won by 15-0 technical fall over Jared Shaw of GHV (Garner) to improve to 24-3. Sutton at 220 lbs. is now 31-8 after winning 3-1 over Kobe Simon of West Liberty.
West used a late penalty point to tie his match with third ranked Gable Sieperda of Central Lyon-George-Little Rock at 6-6, then he escaped with 14 seconds left to win 7-6 at 132 lbs. West is ranked ninth and he is now 40-3.
Fisher won by fall in 4:10 at 195 and the third ranked Madrid student is 52-2 after the fall over Bishop Heelan’s Shyler Langley.
Ryan Munoz of W-G lost to Zeb Gnida of Solon 6-0 in round one, then he won 6-2 over Talen Dengler of West Liberty to move into day two with a 37-21 record.
Caleb Swalla of Van Meter/Earlham is 42-6 after going 1-1 Thursday morning. Swalla dropped a 6-4 decision to Kyler Rieck of Spirit Lake Park in round one, but he won by 11-1 major decision in his consolation match over Jared Shaw of GHV (Garner).
Winterset wrestlers Bryce Hatten (120) and Kruise Kiburz (138) saw their seasons come to an end with two losses, as did VM/E’lam 285 lb. wrestler Derrin Sesker.
