Iowa CapitolThe Iowa legislative body is faced with tackling a multi-million dollar budget deficit for the current fiscal year. Candidates for the soon-to-be-open House District 20 seat discussed this topic on Let’s Talk Guthrie County.

Democratic candidate Warren Varley sees some parallels between a functioning government and a successful business. “I think we need to take a business-like approach to it. The old adage that you have to spend money to make money is true.”

Varley also mentioned the necessity to invest in long-term projects like infrastructure during budget surplus years.

Republican candidate Ray “Bubba” Sorensen also emphasized staying ahead from year to year in the budget process. “The big thing is always trying to make sure that we balance the budget.” We need to work on that headache so we’re not always working from a shortfall position and trying to figure out the best way to handle ourselves.”
