Greene County SheriffIt was a busy day for the Greene County Sheriff’s office as three three-vehicle wrecks happened during a snowy Monday.

The first happened before 10am at the intersection of Highway 30 and S Avenue. The collision happened when a semi-tractor trailer hauling hogs ran a stop sign on S Avenue and hit a westbound fuel tanker, carrying 8,300-gallons of gasoline. The impact ignited the gasoline and Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams said they allowed the gasoline to burn off. A pickup truck was also heading west, hit debris and ended up in the ditch, also catching on fire. Thirty-seven-year-old Travis Davis of Wayland was driving the hog semi and was ejected from the vehicle and eventually taken to a Des Moines hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, 50-year-old David Reed of Jefferson, suffered minor injuries and the driver of the fuel tanker, 43-year-old Jeffrey Mercer of Osceola, was uninjured. All three vehicles were totaled and some hogs perished. The Iowa State Patrol is still investigating the incident.

The second wreck happened at 10:24am near the 2200 block of Highway 4, south of Jefferson. Matthew Sievers of Newell was traveling south behind a New Cooperative semi-tractor trailer driven by David Smith. Sievers didn’t see Smith slow to turn into the New Cooperative site and his hog semi-tractor trailer clipped the New Cooperative semi, bouncing it into the northbound lane and striking a DOT plow truck driven by Ryan Greenley of Boone. Sievers suffered a non life-threatening injury to the head, while Greenley had minor injuries and Smith was uninjured. The hog semi was totaled, but all hogs were safe. There was $15,000 in damages to the DOT truck and $3,000 in damages to the New Cooperative semi.

A third crash happened in the afternoon on north Highway 4 and 150th Street. One vehicle was swerving and caused their vehicle to go sideways, striking the second vehicle in the center. A third vehicle then went into the ditch to avoid being hit. One person was taken to Greene County Medical Center with minor injuries by Greene County Emergency Medical Services.
