A multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 near the VanMeter exit brought traffic to a standstill Monday afternoon.
Just before 1 p.m. the Dallas County Dispatch paged emergency responders to around mile marker 112, saying there were at least eight cars and two semis involved in the accident. One of the semis reportedly had a punctured fuel tank that was leaking into the nearby water. The Interstate was blocked in the westbound lanes for several hours as emergency crews attempted to clean up the wreckage and assess any injuries. Drivers were diverted from the area and those directly behind the accident where directed back off the Interstate once traffic leading to the wreck was controlled. There is no word yet on any injuries, and the official cause of the accident is currently unknown.
The Iowa State Patrol, Dallas County Sheriff, Van Meter First Responders, Van Meter Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services from Van Meter, DeSoto and Waukee aided at the scene.
