At last Monday’s special session of the Stuart City Council, Council Member Theresa Wright-Glass advocated for better equality among city department heads. This included a plea for more funding to Lisa Sherman and the Stuart Public Library.
Wright-Glass specifically mentioned the library’s numerous children’s activities. One of the long-standing activities serves the youngest readers. The weekly Books and Babies program helps newborn-preschool-aged children learn how to talk and read. Sherman describes the program. “We just start in with songs and sign language. We include books that are seasonal, or just for fun, or brand new. I love those. We have some playtime and we do just a lot of singing.”
Sherman noted the program brings out more positive behavioral attributes in the children. She also describes one of her favorite things about the program. “When you see some of these little kids start talking, and they’re doing the hand motions. It’s just an absolute joy. It’s one of the best things for a librarian to see, growth.”
Former Director Sandy Pollard started the program and Sherman is pleased to continue it. The program runs every Thursday at 10am. For more information, contact the library.
