Senior Night at PCM High School in Monroe proved successful for the home team on Friday night as the Mustangs swept two Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball games from Greene County. The girls’ final was 35-27 and the boys’ game was 70-45.
The PCM girls ended the HOIAC season at 5-9 and they are 7-14 overall. Coach Dean Lyons’ Rams fell to 5-14 overall and the HOIAC campaign ended at 2-12 with Saydel (Des Moines) the only conference team the Rams had victories against. The Mustangs led 15-2 early in the second quarter before Greene County started to climb back into the game. The Rams did not make a field goal until 12:10 of playing time had elapsed, but led by senior Laurin Lyons, the team was down by just five at 17-12 at intermission. It was 19-16 early in the third quarter when another long scoring drought by the Rams took place and was too much to overcome. Lyons finished with 17 points and no other Greene County player had more than four. Sophomore Regan Freland had 22 for PCM. The Rams had 26 turnovers and PCM turned the ball over 16 times.
PCM jumped out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter in the boys’ game, then led 36-24 at halftime, and 48-32 at the end of the third quarter. The biggest spread was the final score. Fred Lorentzen’s Mustangs finished in second place in the HOIAC at 11-3 and they improved to 15-5 overall. Coach Chris Nelson’s Rams are 11-8 overall and they finished conference play at 8-6. PCM had a pair of players score 20 points in senior Jackson Thomas and junior Andrew Van Ryswyk. The Rams had 15 from senior Wade Adcock and 13 from junior Trey Hinote. Adcock was ejected from the game with 4:49 remaining after repeated lengthy discussions between officials and coaches. The Greene County coaching staff wasn’t pleased by the call, which was throwing an elbow to the head. A technical foul was the initial call, followed by the ejection.
The Rams are on the road Monday in Winterset for a non-conference girl/boy doubleheader on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage at 5:45 p.m. with the girls’ game at 6 p.m. and the boys’ contest to follow. This is the third time the teams will be trying to play after being weathered out twice.
