Greene County and North Polk split a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy basketball doubleheader on Friday night at Alleman. The Class 3A number 13 Comets won the girls’ game 55-19, while the Rams were boys’ winners 77-56.
NP did not start its usual girls’ lineup since it was senior night and neither team scored for the first 3:30 of playing time. Once the regulars came into the contest, it quickly became one-sided. The Comets led 17-2 after one quarter and 39-5 at the half. Sophomore Jaedon Murphy led NP with 15 points. All 13 Comets played and 11 scored points.
Sophomore Abby Bravard led the Rams with eight points. Coach Dean Lyons’ team was eight of 39 from the field and three of 12 shooting free throws. Greene County turned the ball over 19 times. The NP girls had just eight turnovers and they went 22 of 51 from the floor. The Comets were 12 of 15 from the free throw line.
NP improved to 14-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference, while the Rams fell to 5-12 and 2-10.
The boys’ game saw both team shoot the ball very well. The Rams were 31 of 56 for 55% and they were even better from three-point range at 10 of 15. From the foul line the Rams went eight for 11. The Comets were 18 of 41 overall, seven of 15 from beyond the arc, and nine for 14 shooting free throws. Greene County had 11 turnovers and NP had 12. The top eight in the Rams’ rotation had just seven turnovers for the first 3-1/2 quarters. The points were a single game season high for the Rams.
The Rams had balanced scoring with 19 points from Joe Towers, 18 by Trey Hinote, 13 for Wade Adcock, nine by Lance Hughes, and eight from Ben Bravard. Braden Hoksbergen had 19 points for the Comets with 12 from Colten Parkins, and 10 by Caleb Lomica.
Coach Chris Nelson’s Rams improved to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in the HOIAC. NP fell to 4-13 and 3-9.
