Jefferson City Council 1_23The Jefferson City Council met Tuesday in regular session.

The Council approved Scott Weber to the city’s fire department, and resolutions to Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation to apply for a three-year pledge for $250,000 per year in grant funds, as well as accepting gifts of stocks for a new animal shelter. Additionally, the Council approved a resolution to apply for an Iowa Economic Development Authority Community Catalyst Grant for a building project at 204 East State Street, with a $150,000 match from the City if the grant is approved.

The Council also approved an administrative assistance contract with Region XII Council of Governments for the Set-Aside Housing Program. The contract stipulates that the City will pay no more than $21,000 total for technical assistance for up to six homes, with another maximum of $6,000 for lead removal.

The Council also set March 13th as the public hearing date to adopt the 2019 fiscal year budget for the City. During open forum, Jefferson VFW Post Commander Don Ihnken addressed the Council on their sewer system backing up. He claims the sewer system heading out of the VFW Hall has deteriorated and needed to be replaced. He asked the Council for help in paying for the replacement. Mayor Craig Berry said the Public Works Department will look into the matter.
