The Greene County Treasurer’s office saw a flurry of activity at the end of 2017.
According to the Treasurer’s office a total of $385,476.83 was collected at the end of December in property tax payments, compared to the December of 2016 figure of $20,743. Property owners also paid an advance on their property taxes for September of 2018 of $16,956.49, which was paid for last month. County Treasurer Donna Lawson says when property owners pay three installments in the same year, they can claim all three payments on their taxes. However, if the property owner only has one installment left to pay and they don’t continue to pay an advancement, then they can only claim one property tax statement for the following year for taxes.
“What happens to people sometimes is when you pay three years in one year, and then you’ve paid in advance on the September installment, you’re going to find yourself running a little bit short for your income tax. If that happens, then you’re probably going to have to pay your March installment in 2019 in advance, which you can do.”
Lawson notes that the strong push to pay property taxes by the end of the year is due to the concerns and topics with the federal tax reform bill.
