The Guthrie Center American Legion has been helping community members and veterans alike, get back on their feet for decades. Even though the logistics have changed slightly, the legion is still sponsoring a program to supply those in need with medical equipment.
The equipment inventory includes: walkers, canes, shower chairs, and other equipment aimed at increasing mobility for sick and injured individuals. While the exact origins may extend to the years immediately following World War I, the legion has operated the program since the 1970s. Legion member Dennis Hoover talks about their inventory. “Our inventory is always changing because, say you had a wheelchair or a walker and didn’t need it anymore, we have a lot of it donated to us. So we always have new stuff coming in.”
Guthrie County Public Health partnered with the program in the past, but is returning the facilitation back to the legion. The equipment is free of charge and can be accessed any time, for as long as the individual needs the item. To hear more on the program, listen to tomorrow’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program.
