We continue our conversation with Greene County Activities Director Mitch Moore. On this segment of the Sports Page we talk girls’ basketball. Numbers are up for head coach Dean Lyons and assistant Jeff Lamoureux. The Rams won three games two seasons ago and four games last season. The team is 3-7 at the break and the girls will be trying to break a six game losing streak when they host Woodward-Granger (2-9) on Thursday night in the middle school gym in Jefferson. Coverage on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com begins around 7 p.m. with tipoff at approximately 7:30 p.m.
“Our girls’ basketball program has just done an outstanding job in the weight room. Now, that’s not the reason they’ve won as many games as they have, but it’s certainly part of the process we talk about around here and they’re buying into that. It’s not just the two hours on the practice court. It’s what are they doing outside of basketball, what are they doing in the weight room, or from a nutritional standpoint. Led by the seniors, our girls have bought into that.”
Four of the last five opponents the Rams faced before Christmas were rated number 12 or higher by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Coach Moore talks about getting the January portion of the schedule going. “They’ve got a stretch coming up where they’ve got winnable games and teams they should certainly compete with. If they continue to buy into that process, it’s a program I think will continue to make strides this season.”
We’ll look at boys’ basketball on the other segment of today’s Sports Page.
