acgcThe ACGC basketball teams are looking to get 2018 off to a good start, hosting the Van Meter Bulldogs tonight in West Central Activities Conference doubleheader action.

The Charger girls enter 2018 still searching for their first win of the season. The team has had multiple starting line-ups, and the set of five tonight will be a game-time decision. Senior Mady Smith and sophomore Olivia Laabs are the only two players to start all nine games this season. The Charger girls are also awaiting the return of Sierra O’Brien, who could be on the court tonight.

The Chargers will have to face a team of sharpshooters from Van Meter. Junior Emily Roberts leads the Van Meter girls in scoring with just over 13 points per game. Roberts also leads the team in three-point percentage, with a minimum of five shots taken, and free throw percentage. As a team, the Bulldogs are in the top three in the WCAC in field goal, three-point, and free throw percentage. The girls enter tonight’s contest at 5-4.

The Van Meter boys have had an even better season, coming into the Guthrie Center gymnasium without a loss. Junior Ryan Schmitt and senior Blake Fryar both average over 14 points per game. Schmitt has also nabbed 60 rebounds on the season, good enough for sixth best in the conference. The Bulldogs lead the conference in assists and have the fewest turnovers in the WCAC.
