Ditch FireThe Jefferson Fire Department quickly responded to a controlled burn that got out of control southeast of Jefferson Tuesday afternoon.

According to Greene County Dispatch, at 12:38pm the Jefferson Fire Department and the Greene County Sheriff’s office responded to a call by Charles Wolf of the incident at 270th Street and I Avenue. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio a controlled ditch burn had gotten out of control and fire crews were able to put out the flames within an hour. No one was hurt in the incident and there were no reports of damage.

Williams adds that when doing a large-scale controlled burn, residents are reminded to notify the law enforcement center by calling their non-emergency number at 386-2136. Those doing the controlled burn must provide what day they are planning on doing it and what time frame. Failure to call in a controlled burn that results in fire departments being called out, could result in a citation and a fine.
