Boone was a high school boys’ non-conference winner over Greene County in Boone on Thursday night. The game was the third in four nights this week for Coach Chris Nelson’s team, and the week isn’t over yet as the Rams host Perry in boys’ only action tonight in the middle school gym in Jefferson.

The Toreadors’ won 60-56 to improve to 3-5 on the season while the Rams fell to 6-2. Boone lead nearly the entire game. A first quarter lead of 12-9 was the only time the Rams were ahead and the lead lasted about 10 seconds. Greene County was down by 14 points in the second quarter and trailed by 12 at halftime, 37-25. The deficit grew to 16 points early in the third period before the Rams started chipping away. Junior Lance Hughes, normally a starter, came off the bench to spark the Rams as he scored all 10 of his points in the second half. Senior Wade Adcock had 11 of his 16 points in the second half before fouling out with 36 seconds remaining in the game. Junior Trey Hinote had 10 points and sophomore Carter Morton came off the bench to score eight.

Greene County was 17 of 42 from the floor and 16 of 18 from the free throw line. The Rams made six of 17 three-point shots and had 16 turnovers, 12 in the first half.

Boone had 11 turnovers and went 18 of 37 from the floor including one of eight from beyond the arc. The Toreadors had  three players reach double figures in points. Senior Trevor Van Pelt scored 18 points with junior Justin Aspengren at 17, and senior John Herrick at 14.

Greene County was within two points at 58-56 with 2.7 left on the clock, but Van Pelt hit two free throws to ice it for the Toreadors.
