The Charger girls were merely seconds from securing their first win of the season. But Jade Hays dashed those hopes, sinking a clutch three with less than three seconds in the game to force overtime. The Crusader girls pulled away after the four-minute extra session, outlasting the Chargers 45-43.
Kayla Lenz led all Crusaders with 13 points, while Hays connected on three of seven shooting from beyond the arc. The Chargers were led by seniors Mady Smith and Savana Fuller. Smith scored a season high 14 points in the loss, while Fuller also tallied a season high 12 points and 13 rebounds to secure her first double-double of the season. Two Chargers also received extra playing time, as senior Morgan Meachem decided to step away from the team for the remainder of the season. Jadeyn Carrick received her first start of her career and Kylie Young was cleared from injury and played significant minutes down the stretch.
As for the boys game, junior Ben Obert didn’t disappoint. The leading average scorer in the Rolling Valley Conference lead all scorers with 23 points, while senior Chase Heithoff finished the night with 17. The Chargers’ seven three-pointers weren’t enough to get them off the losing skid. Caden Wardyn and Quynton Younker led all Chargers with 14 points, while Bryce Littler got his game back with eleven points and three from beyond the arc.
The Charger girls drop to 0-9 on the season, while the Charger boys finish 2017 at 3-6.
