Time is running short for Perry residents who need to dispose of their yard waste.
Tomorrow is the final yard waste pickup day of the year in Perry. Additionally, today and tomorrow are the last chances people have to take advantage of the extended open burning dates. Originally the last day for both yard waste pickups and open burning was in November, but with a long and mild autumn, the City felt it was necessary to have additional dates. As a reminder, yard waste must be placed on the curb by 7 a.m. tomorrow in biodegradable bags, and branches must be bundled in lengths no longer than four feet. Open burning can only be done between 10 a.m. and sunset and must be done in the property owner’s backyard.
Perry Public Works Director Jack Butler encourages Perry residents to take advantage of the pickup day, particularly if their yard waste is wet. “We get a couple of these frosty mornings, leaves get wet. And when leaves get wet, they don’t burn they smolder. And then the whole town’s full of smoke. If it’s been damp, and it’s real frosty and leaves are wet, and you know they’re just going to smolder and just make a mess, we’d rather see you get them bagged up.”
