The Smithsonian exhibit: “Hometown Teams” will be stationed at the Mary J. Barnett Memorial Library in Guthrie Center next summer. Recently, Main Street Guthrie Center (MSGC) announced another feature of the exhibit. The Smithsonian selected MSGC to create one of sixteen projects nationwide for the Smithsonian’s Stories from Main Street: Youth Engagement and Skill-building Program.
Program participants incorporate national narratives from the exhibition into the history of their own hometown by conducting research and interviews to create a project highlighting their community. As part of the selection, MSGC and the library received $5,000 to purchase professional audio/visual equipment to produce the stories. The organizations will be working together with Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center High School students to produce the interviews. Library Director Pat Sleister gives a possible area of focus the students may consider. “I kind of think that maybe the topic of the whole season is going to be six-on-six girls basketball.”
Sleister mentions that an official topic has yet to be decided. AC/GC High School will keep the equipment at the conclusion of the project.
