The Dallas County Treasurer’s Office has been requesting new facilities for the Department of Motor Vehicles and driver’s license station, and a recent record day helped illustrate the point.
At the most recent Supervisors meeting, County Treasurer Mitch Hambleton reported that the day before Thanksgiving saw the driver’s license station break records. In a single day, they handled 196 customers. For comparison, on the same day, the driver’s license station in Ames only served 144 people, the Iowa City location served 189, and the Waterloo station served 162. The influx of people created issues with the DMV, as they share a building with the driver’s license station in downtown Adel. Hambleton said his staff reported many DMV customers had difficulty getting in and out of the facility because of the driver’s licence overflow.
Hambleton was proud of how his staff handled the record-setting day, but emphasized that the space problems for his department are only getting worse. The Supervisors have considered possibilities that include moving the driver’s license station to the courthouse, or even the Human Services Campus. However, the Board admits they have a long road ahead before any decisions are made.
