For the first time in over a decade, Greene County will have a new County Assessor.
Linda Spearman recently retired as Greene County Assessor, a position she’s held for 12 years. Before becoming assessor, she served in the Assessor’s office for 17 years. She started as an appraiser before becoming deputy assessor in 2001. She replaced her now husband Jim Spearman as County Assessor in 2005.
As Assessor, Linda says one of her main responsibilities was valuing all real estate in the county on an annual basis. While reviewing real estate, they concentrate on any new construction or any structures that were torn down in a certain year. To date, Linda says they have $1.2 billion in abstracts for 16,000 parcels in the county. She talks about her favorite part of her job, which was working with and helping people.
“You get to see people, you get to visit with people, you get to intermix, they see you, they know you. I have met some of the most wonderful people, have shared stories, and family things that other people have no idea. I know probably more about Greene County than people that have lived here all of their life.”
She describes how she will handle retirement.
“Friday is my first day (of being) retired and I looked at my husband Jim and said, ‘Okay I got to figure out something to do.’ I’m looking forward to it, I really am. It’s a new adventure. It’s going to be hard, but I’m ready to go.”
The County Conference Board, which is made up of all of the cities in the county, the school districts and the Supervisors, will meet to recommend a new appointment to the position. Linda’s retirement is effective November 30th and Chief Deputy Assessor Adam Smith is the acting assessor until a new person is appointed.
