The Charger basketball teams opened their home campaign last night with the first doubleheader of the season against Madrid.
The Lady Chargers got off to a good start, aided by two three-pointers made from Lauryn Embleton. ACGC led the Lady Tigers 19-15 at the half. However, the Lady Tigers leading scorer from last season, Shayla Peters, led a 19 point comeback in the third quarter. The momentum changed in the third after a technical foul was called in the direction of Sierra O’Brien for an illegal substitution. The Lady Tigers pulled away in the fourth, and the Lady Chargers fell 42-51. Senior Morgan Meacham came off the bench to lead the scoring for the Lady Chargers, connecting for twelve points, four from the free-throw line.
Then the boys took the court and watched as Madrid sophomore sensation Branden Gibbons put on a show. Gibbons nailed five three-pointers and accumulated 21 points in the victory. The Tigers led for the majority of the game, but Bryce Littler’s nine point third quarter made it close. Madrid closed out the game with a dominating fourth quarter enroute to a 74-50 result.
The girls fall to 0-2 (0-1 WCC) on the season and the boys are now 0-1 in the conference and overall. Both squads head to Ogden Friday to take on the Bulldogs. You can catch that game on KKRF2 and the Raccoon Valley Radio Network.
