Greene County School BoardThe Greene County School Board established goals they would like to achieve by the end of the school year.

At their meeting last month, the Board created five goals, reviewed each of them, and established action steps to achieve them at their meeting earlier this week. The first goal is assessing facilities and the potential bond referendum. The Board discussed both short-term, which is to pass the bond referendum for a new high school and regional academy, and long-term for the other buildings.

Another goal is to find ways to increase interaction and communication between the board and students, staff, parents and the public. It was decided that each board member would try to get into each school building each trimester. There was also a discussion of starting up a Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).

The third goal is creating a district career guidance plan and 100-percent graduation rate. Superintendent Tim Christensen said they have a committee set up for the guidance plan, while also exploring post-secondary opportunities for students.

The last two goals include: getting the unspent balance authority up to $1 million in five years, and creating an environment that encourages student enrollment while attracting and retaining quality staff.

Board President Dr. Mark Peters talked about why the Board wanted to set up goals for the school year.

“Well with any organization, you need to have direction, and to achieve direction you need goals. And then you need to be able to put a plan in place to carry out those goals, and then you need to evaluate whether or not you got where you needed to go. It’s good to have direction and give the community a sense of what we’re trying to do at the board level.”

At next month’s work session, the Board will aim to finish the action steps for each goal and develop evaluation information to measure the success of each goal.
