Greene County SheriffA burn ban continues to be in effect in Greene County.

Sheriff Jack Williams issued a burn ban on September 22nd. The decision came after he discussed it with the other community fire chiefs. Greene County has seen quite a bit of rainfall the last couple of weeks, but Williams says the burn ban remains in effect.

“The burn ban was put in place just because of how dry it was. And now still talking with farmers the corn is still drying out extremely fast even after having three or four inches of rain. It’s just basically to make sure that the farmers aren’t losing income by losing crops due to a fire. Sparks do go a long ways. Once it gets into the dry corn with a little bit of a breeze, it’s extremely hard to put out.”

He adds that burning trash piles in town or out in the country is still legal during a burn ban, as long as it is in a container, like a 55-gallon drum. No large-scale burns are permitted during a burn ban. Williams notes that the ban will remain in place until after harvest season.
