ffaSome Greene County students are experiencing a trip of a lifetime at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Greene County FFA President Gwen Black says one of the first days of the trip is experiencing the expo, which is like the varied industries building during the Iowa State Fair.

“Except it’s all colleges and all agriculture-based. It’s kind of on steroids and even bigger than the varied industries building. There’s so many different opportunities you just have in that building by applying for scholarships or seeing what Case(IH) and John Deere are going to be revealing for their next year and upcoming equipment.”

Advisor Katie Akers says part of the trip includes visiting a high-volume dairy farm, a fishery and exploring some caves. She recently told the Greene County School Board that she wanted to expose the students to different parts of agriculture that isn’t similar to Iowa. Black talks about her favorite part of the convention.

“We go in and that’s when all of the national officers come in and they are on this huge stage. Oh, it’s just crazy. FFA is almost its own little world where you know these people and when you see them around you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, these people are like celebrities.’ But nobody else knows who you’re talking about unless they’re also an FFA member.”

Black is joined by the other Greene County FFA officers on the trip. The officers include: Vice-President Ben Bravard, Secretary Kara Reed, Treasurer Emily Finch, Sentinel CJ Muir and Officer At-Large Annika Delp.

The national convention is from October 24th through the 28th.
