County bragging rights and snapping a late-season losing streak are on the line for two Guthrie County high school football teams tonight. The last regular season game of the year has the Panorama Panthers (3-5 overall) squaring off against the West Central Valley Wildcats in Panora. The Panthers won last year’s meeting, 44-0, in Stuart.
The Panthers are in the midst of a down season, dropping their previous four district games, including 55-14 last week versus No. 3 Van Meter Bulldogs (8-0 overall). Sophomore Luke South is one of four quarterbacks in Class 1A District 6 with more than 1,000 yards passing, throwing six touchdowns and nine interceptions. Senior Gunnar Grunsted ranks fourth in the district with 64 total tackles, 30 solos.
The Wildcats are coming off back-to-back losses in the district but possess one of the top aerial attacks in Class 1A. Carson Waddle ranks third in the state with 1,696 passing yards. He does lead Class 1A in interceptions thrown with 18, and his 16 touchdown passes are tied for the sixth most. Cole Arnburg is the Wildcats’ top receiver with 20 catches for 596 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Guthrie County bragging rights are on the line tonight when West Central Valley visits Panorama. Kickoff’s set for 7 p.m. in Panora.
