For the first time since the 2013 season, Greene County High School has a State cross-country qualifier. Senior dual-sport Fall athlete Haley Hall finished twelfth at Lake City on Thursday at a Class 2A State Qualifying Meet on the Lake City golf course. Hall also is swimming for Boone this fall under an athletic sharing agreement. 2017 is the first time she’s run X-C since she was in eighth grade.The top 15 runners qualify for State, as do the first, second, and third, place teams. Hall covered the five kilometers (3.1 miles) in 22.41.54. Sophia Jungling of Aplington-Parkersburg won the race in 19:49.04.
The Rams four other runners that had their place counted in the team score were freshman Conner Allender was 21st in 23:39.05, followed by sophomore Bailey Cunningham, 22nd in 23:49,87, sophomore Kassie Lamoureux, 26th in 24:10.85 and Ashlee Harmeyer, 33rd in 24:28.78.
Shenandoah won the girls’ team title with 60 points, followed by Okoboji (Milford) 64, A-P 95, Pocahontas Aread 99, Red Oak 101, Greene County 103, Southeast Valley (Cowrie) 187, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows 208, South Central Calhoun 252m and 260 by Van Meter.
Spencer Moon of SCC won the boys’ race in 17:25.36. The top Greene County runner was Luis Velazco. The freshman was clocked in 19:39.37. Sophomore Garrett Tasler was next for the Rams in 19:46.67, good for 36th place. Senior Nic Killion was 44th in 20:04.37, followed by sophomore Brian Hardaway, 78th in 22:27,20, and freshman Trevor Lebeck, 83rd, in 22:51.07.
The boys’ team winners was Sheldon with 67 points. Okoboji had 72 with 78 by A-P. C-G-D had 144, followed by SCC 178, Shenandoah 183, Red Oak 191, SEV 218*, Southwest Iowa (Corning) 218, Clarinda 241, Greene County 272, VM 288, Poki Area 332, East Sac County (Lake View) 377.
