So far in October, Greene County students are getting involved in the community.

Third graders were recent participants in a Monarch Eggs Pilot Project. Iowa State Professional Development and the Iowa Monarch Conservation Consortium worked with the students to transfer about 180 monarch butterfly eggs to petri dishes. The students watched how a caterpillar transformed into a butterfly. The students then tagged them before they were released. The project is part of the Monarch Eggs Project, which hopes to repopulate the monarch butterfly population.

Fifth and sixth grade choir students performed in front of 1,000 people at an Iowa Wild hockey game last weekend in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena. Director Brenda Roberts says students rehearsed the musical selection, but the whole ensemble wasn’t available until the day of the performance. She felt everyone performed very well.

Finally, October is Bullying Prevention Month and high school teachers have been wearing unique neck ties every day in October to raise awareness. Sophomore Terson Salvin requested to wear a tie this past Wednesday and created the “Yerson Effect” where students could wear ties.
