As National Fire Prevention Week continues, there are lots of ways fires can be prevented in homes.
Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams says the most common areas he’s seen fires start inside a home is at an outlet that has too many appliances plugged into it. He cautions against doing that and advises that when you are plugging an appliance into an outlet, that it is rated to handle the voltage from the appliance. Another area of concern in the kitchen, especially around Thanksgiving time, when grease fires are caused by frying a turkey.
“If you do have one of those, do not put water on it. Try and have a fire extinguisher close, a carbon dioxide extinguisher or one of the powdered ones, and then shoot above it and let the powder drop down onto it, and don’t shoot directly into it. And same goes with on your stove, shoot the fire extinguisher above it. And if you can get a lid on the pot to snuff out the fire, that’s another way to do it too.”
Williams adds that when Christmas rolls around, be conscience to not overload outlets with plugging in too many decorations.
