It’s National Fire Prevention Week and the Jefferson Fire Department is once again helping to education youngsters with specialized programs.
Fire Chief Jack Williams says his fire department will be at Greene County Elementary School this Friday to teach kids about fire safety and how to prevent fires. He points out that they will dress up in their full gear and enter the kids’ classrooms to help prevent them from being afraid if they were to respond to a fire around them.
“It’s just good to have the kids see what we look like in full fire gear so if they do have a house fire and we have to come in and get them, it’s not as scary. They’ve seen us before in air packs and everything.”
He notes they also describe other fire safety precautions and how to do it in cases where there is fire in their homes.
“It’s just good to go over ‘stop, drop and roll’; how to get out of a smoke-filled house; staying safe in your room by closing the door, putting towels at the bottom to keep the smoke out, that kind of thing. It’s just good to talk with them so it’s fresh in their heads.”
Due to construction on the north end of the building, all demonstrations will be done on the south side during Friday’s programs.
