The Perry varsity football team battled the elements along with Webster City Friday evening, falling 42-7 to the Lynx.

There were thunderstorms expected in the area, so the start time of the game was pushed up to 5:30 p.m. The first half started quickly for Webster City, as they scored on their first possession with an 8-yard touchdown run from Carter Bedford. The Lynx would score touchdowns two more times in the first half, the first on a 31-yard run by quarterback Dylan Steen, the second on a 6-yard run from Bedford. Perry punted on their first four possessions of the game, but managed to sustain a drive late in the first half. They took the ball down the field and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Alexis Garrido with under a minute to play in the half. The score at halftime was 21-7, Webster City on top.

Halftime lasted much longer than anticipated, however, as the officials observed lightning and ordered the players off the field. The lightning delay lasted around one hour before play resumed in the second half. With the field sopping wet and their momentum gone, Perry struggled to get anything going in the third of fourth quarters. The same wasn’t true for Webster City, as they scored touchdowns on three consecutive drives to go up 42-7. After their final touchdown, the game went into a running clock and ended at that score.

The loss brings Perry’s record to 2-5 on the season. Next week they will host rival Greene County in the annual “Battle for the Cowbell” game. You can hear all the action live next Friday from Dewey Field on FM 99.7, AM 1310 KDLS, as well as on FM 98.9 KGRA.
