Plans for various Greene County projects are almost complete.
Vision 2020 Coordinator Zach Mannheimer says a steering committee has identified ten projects to do throughout the county. The projects include: a business class restaurant and brew pub, sports complex and aquatic center, school facilities, daycare and afterschool programs, housing, completed street systems, walking and biking trail system and projects in Grand Junction, Scranton and Paton.
Mannheimer points out the top two projects are developing a business class restaurant and brew pub, along with an aquatic center.
“At the end of the day, we determined from a financial standpoint that it’s probably better to do a brewpub, which basically means that everything on tap is a micro beer, ideally as local as possible. And then with the aquatic park, this is going to be a marriage with the athletic facility that will be brand new. We want to create a natural playscape that’s water-based for kids, as well as a spray ground for kids and a beer garden that’s probably not for kids.”
The projects proposed for Grand Junction are buying buildings in the downtown area and re-building them to attract artist groups from larger cities. A plan in Scranton is developing incentive packages to re-open to former Lincoln Highway restaurant and in Paton, there are plans to build a 16-unit housing complex for John Deere and Bauer Built employees.
Greene County Development Corporation spearheaded the start of the Vision 2020 plan and Executive Director Ken Paxton points out an important part of who made up the steering committee that decided on the top ten projects.
“About 50-percent of the steering committee is under 35. We’ve been really lucky in getting our young people to come out. They’re the ones that we want keep in our community and attract additional young families to move here. We want their input on which projects we move forward with.”
Final recommendations will be made towards the end of October.
