4-hIf you’ve ever enjoyed a meal from the 4-H food stand at the Guthrie County Fair, you have Frank Johnson to thank. Johnson was officially recognized recently by the Iowa 4-H Foundation with his induction into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.

Johnson began his 4-H career early, joining the Pioneer Hawkeyes Club in 1956. He was active in showing hogs and sheep, woodworking, and leadership roles. Johnson was also active in FFA and received the star farmer award.

In the 1970s, Johnson became a 4-H leader. He became known for organizing tours to each member’s home, giving them a chance to show off their projects. His love for cooking and concern for youth nourishment gave way to the 4-H food stand. He supplied a large portion of the meals from his own freezer and was always there to serve the customers.

Johnson served on the Guthrie County Extension Council for two years and was chairman of the Iowa Chop Tent for many years.
